Injectable Neuromodulators
Over the last decade, BOTOX, Dysport and Xeomin have become valuable therapeutic tools in aesthetic medicine. These injectable neuromodulators significantly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles by blocking the actions of the muscles that produce them. Small amounts of the purified proteins are injected into the affected area through a tiny needle with minimal discomfort. Because this procedure requires no anesthesia or recovery time and produces only minimal swelling, patients can usually return to normal activities the same day. Effects begin to show between 24-72 hours after treatment and generally last between 3-6 months. BOTOX Cosmetic was the first neuromodulator to receive FDA approval for cosmetic use in the United States. Xeomin and Dysport are comparable products that have received more recent FDA approval; both have been widely used in Europe prior to their introduction in the U.S.
